Man takes hostages at California bank as bomb threat prompts evacuations
On Tuesday, the Bakersfield Police Department confirmed an active hostage situation at the Chase Bank on 17th Street and Chester in Bakersfield.
Officers responded around 1 p.m. after reports of a man allegedly holding at least one hostage with a bomb strapped to his body.
Mandatory evacuations are underway while police closed roads between 18th Street and Truxtun Avenue, as well as between Chester and H Streets.
Authorities locked down City Hall North, City Hall South, the Development Services Building, and Bakersfield Police Headquarters, restricting public access to these properties.
Officials advised the public to stay clear of the area as the Bakersfield incident remains under active investigation by law enforcement.
