Armed police shoot man dead after he pulls out weapon during stand off in Bedford
Bedfordshire Police referred the shooting to the police watchdog after officers said the man presented a weapon during a hours-long standoff.
On Tuesday morning, Bedfordshire Police shot and killed a man in his 40s at a property on Aylesbury Road in Bedford following a lengthy standoff.
Responding to reports of damaged vehicles late Monday, officers arrived at the street to find a man barricaded inside a property and refusing to leave.
Specialist firearms teams and negotiators attempted for hours to talk the man down before he reportedly presented a weapon shortly after 9:30am, prompting armed officers to open fire.
Bedfordshire Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, which launched an independent investigation and sent investigators to the scene.
Residents evacuated from homes along the street during the standoff have since been allowed to return, though a police cordon remains in place as the IOPC inquiry continues.
