Man shot and killed by ICE in Maine was not the target of warrant, Sen. Angus King says
The shooting is at least the ninth deadly encounter involving federal immigration officials since President Donald Trump returned to office, according to AP analysis.
On Monday, July 13, 2026, a federal immigration officer fatally shot a motorist in Biddeford, Maine, marking the second such incident in a week involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told Sen. Angus King that the officer opened fire after the man attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon while being pursued for deportation.
Witnessing from a third-floor window, Daniel Boucher reported hearing "pop, pop, pop" and saw a small car "turned 90 degrees to the curb" with an SUV behind it.
Monday's killing marks the ninth death from an encounter with federal immigration officials since President Donald Trump returned to office 18 months ago, including the July 7 fatal shooting of Salgado Araujo.
ICE arrested 546 people in Maine between the start of Trump's second term and March 11, 2026, with about 45% of those arrested having criminal backgrounds, according to analyzed data.
