Florida Set to Execute Man Convicted of Raping and Killing a Woman 3 Decades Ago

Florida has scheduled the execution of Anthony Wainwright for June 10, 2025, in connection with the kidnapping, rape, and murder of Carmen Gayheart that occurred in Lake City in 1994.
Wainwright and Richard Hamilton, both prison escapees from North Carolina, kidnapped Gayheart at gunpoint from a grocery lot before murdering her.
The men transported Gayheart to a remote, forested location within Hamilton County, where they assaulted and murdered her; both were ultimately given death sentences in 1995.
On May 29, the Florida Supreme Court declined Wainwright's request for a stay, and later, the U.S. Supreme Court dismissed his appeals during sessions held in late 2023 and early 2024.
Wainwright’s execution would mark Florida’s sixth carried out in 2025, with Governor DeSantis approaching an unprecedented number of death warrants signed this year.
