Man sentenced for throwing rocks, burning debris at CHP officers during L.A. protest
Vega is the fifth defendant sentenced in the case, and prosecutors said he lit burning debris and threw rocks at officers during the protest.
- On Monday, United States District Judge John F. Walter sentenced Ismael Vega, 42, of the Westlake neighborhood to 37 months in federal prison for throwing rocks and ignited debris at California Highway Patrol officers during a June 2025 violent protest.
- During the evening of June 8, 2025, two days after violence erupted during immigration enforcement protests, Vega joined a large group of protesters on the Main Street overpass above the 101 Freeway in downtown Los Angeles.
- In his plea agreement, Vega admitted dropping burning cardboard onto a CHP vehicle and throwing rocks at officers below, acknowledging the debris created substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury. Judge Walter ordered $253,415 in restitution.
- Vega is the fifth defendant sentenced in the case. Co-defendant Yachua Mauricio Flores, 23, faces sentencing August 3, while lead defendant Adam Charles Palermo, 40, is scheduled for December 14 and faces up to 20 years in prison.
- Prosecutors noted the incident "stood apart in its magnitude," as a California Highway Patrol sergeant with nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience described the profound, lasting impact the violent civil disorder had on both him and his son.
