3 Rescued After Vessel Sinks on Stuart Lake Near Fort St. James

Nearby residents helped after the man spent about 90 minutes in the water, and paramedics assessed all three people at Pitka Bay Resort.

  • On Tuesday, Fort St. James RCMP rescued three people after their 17.5-foot boat capsized near Sowchea Bay on Stuart Lake. Officers retrieved one man from the water while two others reached shore.
  • One man spent 90 minutes clinging to debris after the capsizing, as he was not wearing a personal flotation device. Nearby residents heard cries for help and launched their own boat to assist before RCMP arrived.
  • The other man and child, both wearing personal flotation devices, safely reached shore. All three survivors were transported to Pitka Bay Resort for assessment by B.C. Emergency Health Services.
  • RCMP is reminding boaters to "Wear a properly fitted PFD or lifejacket at all times while on the water." Officers also advise checking weather conditions and inspecting vessels before departing.
  • This incident occurs 10 days after a charter fishing boat sank in Georgia Strait off British Columbia's southern coast. Seven people are presumed drowned in that separate event.
