Police Say Suspect Charged After Reports of Man Waving Machete at Driver on Highway 1

On Aug 28, a road rage incident on Highway 1 in Tappen escalated when 34-year-old Chiwetin Wapachee allegedly threatened another driver with a machete, sparking a multi-jurisdictional police chase that ended in Sicamous.
Wapachee continued eastbound on the Highway, committing numerous violations under the Motor Vehicle Act as Salmon Arm RCMP located the vehicle and pursued it toward Sicamous.
Sicamous RCMP established a roadblock at the east end of the Bruhn Bridge, where the driver attempted to turn the Honda around but was blocked in by police. Four officers were required to take the resisting suspect into custody.
Wapachee now faces multiple charges including possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, uttering threats, and dangerous operation of a conveyance. Authorities confirmed there were no injuries to the suspect, police, or the victim.
The Bruhn Bridge was previously closed for collision reconstruction by investigators as the investigation remains active. Wapachee remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing following the arrest that concluded the high-risk pursuit.
