Man Killed by Train Believed to Be Prisoner Who Escaped From Court Van on A1(M)
Two transport contractor staff were taken to hospital after the escape, and police referred the death to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Shortly after 9am on Thursday, a man in his 40s escaped from a prison van during an altercation on the A1 hard shoulder near Stevenage. British Transport Police found him dead on the tracks near Welwyn North railway station 40 minutes later.
Two transport contractor staff sustained injuries "during an altercation" inside the van when the detainee resisted while the vehicle was stationary on the A1 southbound carriageway. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.
Resident David Elsdon, 82, who lives near the station, described the response as "a bit of a shock" and told the BBC he counted 10 police cars arriving while preparing to leave for town. The scale of the police presence stunned local residents.
Hertfordshire Constabulary referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as standard protocol. Thameslink, LNER, and Great Northern trains faced significant delays across London, Hertfordshire, Peterborough, and Cambridgeshire before services resumed with cancellations ongoing.
Formal identification of the man remains pending, though police say the family is aware. A file has been prepared for the coroner; those affected by the incident can contact the Samaritans on 116 123 for support.
