Diver Dies in Third Shark Attack in Same Country Within a Month
Authorities said the 35-year-old spearfisher was attacked by a shark estimated at 4.5 meters long, the third fatal shark attack in three weeks.
On Saturday, 35-year-old Daniel Turpin was killed by a suspected 4.5-metre shark while spearfishing 10 metres off Michaelmas Island near Albany, Western Australia; emergency responders could not revive him.
The tragedy marks the third fatal shark attack in Australia within three weeks, with four deaths recorded this year; two recent incidents involved spearfishermen in Western Australia.
Turpin's family described him as an "adored husband, son, brother and uncle" with a "deep respect for the ocean." Albany locals expressed shock, noting the last fatal incident occurred 12 years ago.
Western Australia Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis urged water users to check the Smart Shark WA app for activity alerts, stating there is "certainly no data" suggesting increased shark activity compared to previous years.
Australian Underwater Federation president Graham Henderson advised divers to mitigate risks by "diving in a pair, one up, one down," while planning to release updated safety codes for recreational diving and spearfishing.
