Man stabbed to death in Sydney’s west

Police say the 13-year-old was known to them and officers seized CCTV and phone video as they investigate whether the attack was random or targeted.

  • Joshua Smith died after being stabbed in the torso at Cleeve Close, near Westfield Mount Druitt, on Friday shortly before 9pm. Emergency services rendered assistance, but he died at the scene.
  • CCTV footage shows three men attacking Smith after a confrontation near the shopping centre. Superintendent Brendan Gorman called it a "horrendous incident" while detectives seek "about a dozen people in the area at the time."
  • Smith collapsed nearby where bystanders performed CPR before paramedics arrived. NSW Police seized CCTV and mobile phone videos to investigate potential gangland links and the deceased's "some history" with police.
  • Detectives are working to determine whether the attack was random or targeted. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 to assist the investigation.
  • NSW Police are also investigating a separate fatal stabbing at North Albury on the Victorian border. The incident underscores a pattern of violent crime across the region requiring urgent public cooperation.
