Man found guilty over XL bully attack that killed woman in his home
Ashley Warren left Esther Martin, with limited mobility, to care for banned XL bully dogs without required exemption certificates, resulting in her fatal mauling with over 60 bite wounds.
- On Tuesday, a jury at Chelmsford Crown Court convicted Ashley Warren, 41, of owning Bear, the XL bully that mauled Esther Martin to death by a majority of 11 to one after 14 hours and 28 minutes of deliberation.
- When Warren travelled to London to shoot a video, he asked 5ft 3in Esther Martin, 68, with limited mobility and little dog-handling experience, to mind two adult XL bully dogs and eight puppies, despite not holding exemption certificates.
- Prosecutor Christopher Paxton KC said, `Esther suffered dozens and dozens of dog bite marks and wounds, which led to a catastrophic bleed and her death`, as police footage showed officers entering with riot shields and tasers while a child was present.
- A judge at Chelmsford Crown Court told Ashley Warren a custodial sentence is inevitable and he will be sentenced later, while jurors also convicted him of possessing a bladed article at Clacton railway station on February 3, 2024.
- As the first fatal prosecution since the law took effect on 1 February 2024, Essex Police found Warren was illegally keeping large, hard-to-control XL bully-type dogs in poor conditions, raising enforcement concerns.
