Man Dies at School Construction Site in Owings Mills

OWINGS MILLS, MARYLAND, JUL 22 – The collapse at Deer Park Elementary critically injured a 50-year-old worker who died despite rescue efforts, marking the second fatal trench collapse in Maryland this year.

  • Luis Medrano, a construction worker, died Tuesday after a trench partially gave way at the site of the new Deer Park Elementary School being built in Owings Mills, Baltimore County.
  • The trench collapse happened during ongoing construction for the county’s first Net Zero Energy elementary school, with site work starting last fall and building begun in spring.
  • Medrano was digging in the trench when a large amount of dirt dropped on him after water sprayed up and filled the area, leading to his critical injuries and eventual death.
  • Firefighters found Medrano critically injured at 8:25 a.m., other workers pulled him from the trench, but he was pronounced dead at 8:39 a.m., after a call for a confined space rescue.
  • Maryland Occupational Safety and Health launched an investigation into this second deadly trench collapse in the state this year, following a similar fatal incident in Catonsville in February.
