Swimmer Drowns at Iconic Australian Beach as Summer Death Toll Rises
Two men drowned within 24 hours on NSW south coast beaches amid rough water conditions, with emergency responders treating multiple victims, police said.
- On Saturday, January 3 a 34-year-old man drowned at Green Patch Beach, an unpatrolled area in Booderee National Park, Jervis Bay Territory.
- The Jervis Bay drowning followed a death at Lobster Bay about 24 hours earlier, with police probing whether the man in his 50s drowned or had a medical episode.
- Others at the beach brought people ashore and emergency services began CPR on the 34-year-old, who was pronounced dead, while paramedics treated three men believed to be in their 20s for minor injuries.
- ACT Policing said it is investigating the Jervis Bay death and will prepare a report for the ACT coroner because the incident occurred in Jervis Bay Territory waters.
- The incidents add to recent deaths along the NSW coastline as Royal Lifesaving Australia reports the national summer drowning toll is 29 as at Saturday, January 3, with New Year period risk three times greater.
