Man charged with manslaughter after dog-bite death in Wakefield
Lee Ellis, 55, has been charged with manslaughter and being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control following a fatal incident on Saturday; he is remanded to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court today.
Emergency services were called to an altercation on a disused railway line off Blacker Lane at 1:30 PM on Saturday, where a 55-year-old man was bitten by a German Shepherd and transported to hospital in critical condition but died shortly after 7:00 PM.
The German Shepherd involved remains in police kennels as inquiries continue. Det Chief Insp Michael Cox confirmed two witnesses provided accounts, saying "The two people who stopped to assist and direct police have both come forward."
West Yorkshire Police are conducting the investigation "at pace" to understand the events leading to the death while providing specialist support to the victim's family at this "extremely distressing time," Cox added.
Addressing inaccurate online discussions, Det Chief Insp Michael Cox urged the public to "avoid speculation about those involved and what has taken place" to protect the ongoing legal proceedings.
