Man charged with manslaughter after dog-bite death in Wakefield
Police say the investigation is ongoing as witnesses have come forward and the seized German Shepherd remains in kennels.
On Tuesday, West Yorkshire Police charged farrier Lee Ellis, 55, with manslaughter and being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog following the death of 55-year-old James Judge on August 15 in Wakefield.
Emergency services responded to an altercation on the old trainline footpath off Blacker Lane in Calder Grove on Saturday, August 15, where a 55-year-old man was bitten by a German Shepherd during the incident.
At Bradford Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, defense solicitor Rob Fones stated there was "a verbal altercation in regards to right of way" before the attack, while prosecutors noted a bite to the back of the knee significantly contributed to death.
District Judge Mark Daley granted Ellis bail on condition he resides at his Blacker Lane address until his next appearance at Leeds Crown Court on September 16, as two independent witnesses provided accounts to police.
Det Chief Insp Michael Cox thanked witnesses for coming forward and urged the public to avoid speculation, while the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team continues the investigation "at pace" and specialist support is provided to the family.
