Man charged with hate crimes after confrontation with ‘Today’ show’s Melvin at NBC studio
NBC says it is reviewing security protocols after a man entered a restricted Studio 1A area, approached Craig Melvin and was arrested without injury.
On Thursday, police arrested Andrew Truelove, 41, inside 30 Rockefeller Center after he allegedly confronted Today show anchor Craig Melvin in an unauthorized studio area.
Truelove allegedly bypassed security by following an NBC employee into the restricted area while searching for weather anchor Al Roker, then shouted racial slurs at Melvin.
At his Friday arraignment, a judge set bail at $10,000 and issued a full temporary order of protection for Melvin and Roker. Truelove remains in custody on Rikers Island facing up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Melvin returned to the program on Friday, reassuring viewers he is "doing just fine." NBC stated it is reviewing security protocols to ensure a safe environment for all studio visitors and staff.
Truelove has an extensive criminal history including prior arrests for allegedly stealing Sandy Hook memorial signs, and he faces a court date on Wednesday, July 22, with several other cases pending before New York courts.
