Man charged with five counts of attempted murder linked to terrorism
Police said five people were hurt in attacks across the city, and counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation into alleged anti-Muslim violence.
- On Monday, Lewis Hawkes appeared in Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with five counts of attempted murder linked to terrorism. The 36-year-old made no plea and was remanded in custody.
- Five people were hurt across Edinburgh on Friday night in attacks suspected to have an anti-Muslim motivation. Two men were stabbed "multiple times" at Broomhouse Mosque, while three others were attacked on Leith Walk.
- Police Scotland confirmed an investigation led by counter-terrorism officers is ongoing. The Crown Office stated all charges are aggravated by reason of having a terrorist connection.
- Officers have spoken to more than 90 multi-faith organisations across Edinburgh to address community concerns. Affected businesses have also been contacted by Police Scotland.
