Man charged in killing of actor James Handy found mentally incompetent for prosecution
The judge ordered psychiatric treatment and involuntary medication after finding Gledhill cannot understand the charges or help his defense.
- On Monday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi ruled that 44-year-old Michael Gledhill is mentally incompetent to stand trial for the June 3 stabbing death of 81-year-old actor James Handy.
- Officers responded to a 911 call at the home where Gledhill claimed, "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin," police said. Gledhill was arrested after telling authorities he was the person they were looking for.
- Handy, a character actor known for roles in "Jumanji" and "Top Gun: Maverick," was in a relationship with Gledhill's mother. Brian Delate said she had fixed up her garage so her son could live there.
- Cavalluzzi also found that Gledhill cannot make proper medication decisions and signed an order for involuntary medication for one year, citing a psychiatrist's determination that proper drugs could greatly help his mental health.
- A hearing scheduled for July 14 will address Gledhill's long-term placement. His criminal prosecution remains paused until he is found competent to assist in his own defense.
