Man quizzed over huge illegal waste dumps
The 32-year-old is being questioned after authorities said thousands of tonnes were dumped at three sites in a wider investigation.
On Thursday, a 32-year-old man was arrested in Sunderland during a joint operation by Northumbria Police and the Environment Agency investigating illegal waste dumping at sites in Peterlee, Hartlepool, and Callerton.
Collectively, the three illegal sites contain "thousands of tonnes of waste." Reported over the summer, The Agency secured the locations using concrete blocks to prevent further access.
Environmental Crime Team Leader Mark Rumble stated, "This arrest is an important step as our investigation into illegal dumping in the North East continues." The suspect remains in custody being questioned.
Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle said the arrest shows the government is "delivering on that promise" to stop organized waste crime gangs in the North East.
Waste crime costs the UK more than £1 billion annually, prompting Government plans for increased fines and stricter sanctions. The Environment Agency urges reporting suspicious HGV activity via 0800 807060.
