Man arrested for offences linked to huge illegal waste site in Wigan
A 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of environmental, fraud and money laundering offences as investigators probe 25,000 tonnes of waste.
- West Midlands Police arrested a 58-year-old Birmingham man on Wednesday for environmental, fraud, and money laundering offences linked to an illegal waste dump at Bolton House Road in Wigan.
- Multiple lorries began piling waste up to 20 metres high at the Bolton House Road site in January 2025, creating an estimated 25,000 tonnes of debris that plagued the Bickershaw community.
- Following a closure order granted earlier this year, The Government pledged in March to fund the cleanup estimated at £4.5m, while Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds vowed to "crack down on waste criminals."
- Ian Crewe, Area Director for Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire at the Environment Agency, called the arrest a "vital step in collecting new evidence" and stated illegal dumping is an "attack on our communities."
- The National Environmental Crime Unit continues leading the criminal investigation to identify those responsible, though the Environment Agency has released no further details as the cleanup effort proceeds.
