Man arrested after Vancouver convenience store clerk shot during doorway conversation
Police say surveillance video helped identify the suspect, and a GoFundMe for the injured clerk has raised over $36,000.
- On September 6, a shooting at a Mount Pleasant convenience store left clerk Mohammad Ali seriously injured, prompting a Vancouver Police Department investigation that led to charges against 32-year-old Victor Sorensen-Avila.
- CCTV footage reviewed by VPD Major Crime detectives showed the suspect shooting Ali during an attempted robbery, allowing officers to identify the assailant near Main Street and 16th Avenue.
- Kamloops RCMP took Sorensen-Avila into custody on an unrelated matter, while a GoFundMe campaign raised over $36,000 for Ali, whom Market owners call "the heart of Main Street."
- The BC Prosecution Service approved charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon against Sorensen-Avila, who remains in custody in Kamloops awaiting a bail hearing.
- While gun violence in Mount Pleasant is "deeply concerning," Constable Darren Wong stated police do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the community.
