Man arrested after rabbi’s car burnt
A 47-year-old man was arrested two weeks after the rabbi's car with Hanukkah decorations was firebombed; police suspect the attack was targeted amid rising tensions.
- A 47-year-old from Richmond was taken into custody on Victoria Street about 9am on Tuesday and is expected to be interviewed over the alleged Christmas morning arson.
- About 2.50am on Christmas Day a silver sedan with a Happy Chanukah sign was firebombed in the driveway of a local rabbi’s home on Balaclava Road, St Kilda East.
- Firefighters at the scene confirmed the family escaped without injury after the rabbi’s wife and three children, aged one, four and 10, evacuated following the car alarm and smell of smoke.
- Richmond man John Argento faced Melbourne Magistrates Court charged with six counts of arson and other offences; he said over a video link, `I'm innocent of this arson,` and was remanded to appear again on Thursday.
- We won't fully understand the motives of this arsonist until we get them into custody, Southern Metro Region Assistant Commissioner Chris Gilbert said, noting detectives called the attack targeted but not a broader threat, with the arrest coming almost two weeks later.
