Court shown footage of alleged Hainault sword attacker unboxing samurai weapon
- Marcus Monzo, a 37-year-old martial arts enthusiast from east London, is on trial at the Old Bailey for allegedly murdering 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin and attacking four others on April 30 last year in Hainault.
- The attacks followed Monzo's purchase of two handmade Katana swords in February 2024 and a video of him unboxing one of them on April 4 was shown to jurors as part of the evidence.
- Monzo launched a 20-minute rampage beginning by driving his van into pedestrian Donato Iwule before using a 60cm sword to fatally wound Daniel and injure others, including police officers and a paramedic.
- Jurors saw a four-minute clip from Monzo's iPhone where he praised the sword as 'freaking sexy' and described it as 'very ninja stuff,' while prosecutors said he was under cannabis influence and his psychosis was self-induced without reduced responsibility.
- Monzo has admitted to carrying the swords but denies all charges including murder, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause serious harm, breaking and entering with aggravation, and carrying a weapon shaped like a blade; the trial will consider his mental condition and behavior during the incidents.
