Man accused of cutting off his genitals, using them to start a fire, authorities say

Police say Christopher Peden admitted to starting the fire with gasoline and a knife, and investigators found a container, four lighters and a knife at the scene.

  • Christopher Peden, 36, faces one count of arson after allegedly setting fire to his mother's detached garage in Fort Wayne, Ind. on May 6.
  • Documents say Peden confessed that, at about 2 a.m., he entered the garage and used a kitchen knife to cut off his genitals, then poured gasoline on them to ignite the structure.
  • Investigators discovered a gasoline container, four BIC lighters, and a knife at the scene; the fire also damaged two additional properties and two vehicles.
  • While receiving treatment at a hospital, Peden told officers he was "dishonest" about a downtown Fort Wayne stabbing and wanted to be truthful regarding the garage fire.
  • Facing up to 12 years in prison if convicted, Peden is due in Allen County court next week to set trial dates for the felony arson charge.
