Mamdani not called to speak at NYC funeral of Army sergeant killed in Iranian attack: report
Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the service, while Rampersad’s family kept the funeral from becoming a political event.

- Born in Trinidad and raised in Queens, Rampersad attended P.S. 108 and Forest Hills High School before graduating from John Jay College with a degree in criminal justice; she enlisted at age 21 after her mother asked her to wait.
- Carol Acevedo, Rampersad's mother, told mourners, "I want all of you who have kids to know- hug your kids. I don't have mine to hug anymore," while General Glenn Henke said soldiers who served with her "will continue to carry her forward with them."
- Governor Kathy Hochul ordered New York state flags flown at half-staff, and she and Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended alongside Attorney General Letitia James; the motorcade then traveled to Long Island National Cemetery as dozens of residents lined Crossbay Boulevard with flags.
- Local leaders are working to permanently honor Rampersad by renaming a stretch of Cross Bay Boulevard, with Borough President Donovan Richards stating, "We want people in this community to never forget to look up at that street sign- little girls and little boys to know that we had a hero amongst us.
