Mamata Asks Trinamool Congress Poll Candidates to Rebuild Party; Says Dissenters Free to Leave
Banerjee told defeated candidates to rebuild the Trinamool Congress and said members free to leave should go, as the party seeks to recover from its worst setback in years.
Party supremo Mamata Banerjee met contesting candidates at her Kalighat residence on Saturday to urge them to rebuild the All India Trinamool Congress following its worst electoral setback in years during the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.
In the 2026 Assembly elections, the BJP won 207 of the 294 seats while the TMC secured only 80, with 211 of its 291 candidates losing, including several heavyweight leaders and ministers.
Banerjee herself lost her Bhabanipur seat to former ally Suvendu Adhikari, now the first Chief Minister of the BJP government in West Bengal, compounding her party's difficulties.
Addressing internal unrest over possible defections, Banerjee stated that those wishing to leave are free to do so, while telling loyalists to rebuild damaged offices, saying, "If needed, I too will paint them."
The Party reiterated its claim that the electoral mandate had been "stolen," while declaring, "Trinamool Congress will never bow down" despite internal challenges and speculation over further defections.
Mamata Banerjee has pledged to reinvigorate the party in Bengal. She stated at a party meeting that members who wish to leave will be allowed to do so, but she will personally rebuild the party. This statement comes at a time when the party is facing some internal crises. This move by Mamata Banerjee is being seen as a significant effort to revitalize the TMC.
