Rights groups denounce arrest of 2 Malian journalists, in latest crackdown on press freedom
The arrests came after one journalist criticized a cybercrime law and another described JNIM’s control of Kidal, press groups said.
Malian authorities arrested two prominent journalists, Abderhmane Keita and Chahana Takiou, in the past two days, marking the latest crackdown on freedom of expression by the West African country's military leadership.
Prior to their arrests, Takiou criticized the application of a cybercrime law, while Keita reported on his program "Grand Jury" that the Al-Qaeda-linked JNIM group controls the northern town of Kidal.
According to the Maison de La Presse, Keita faces charges of "undermining national unity and the credibility of the State" and "dissemination of false and misleading information."
Foreign media outlets, including France24, TV5 Monde, and Radio France International, remain banned from broadcasting in Mali as military leaders intensify their crackdown on political dissent and journalists.
Since seizing power in recent years, Mali's military junta has severed ties with Western powers and aligned with Russia amid a record number of extremist attacks across the region.
In Mali, following the detention of journalists Chahana Takiou on Monday 8th and Abdrahmane Keita on Tuesday 9th June, Reporters Without Borders denounces "arbitrary arrests".
