Rock Drummer Dies Mid-Concert After Collapsing Onto Drum Kit
The 56-year-old musician collapsed two songs into Meditasi’s set and did not regain consciousness after emergency treatment, his brother said.
- On July 18, veteran Malaysian rock drummer Raja Azreen Raja Talib died after collapsing onstage at the Teruntum Rock Festival in Kuantan, Pahang. The 56-year-old Meditasi drummer slumped over his kit just two songs into the band's set.
- Azreen's brother, Raja Azman Raja Talib, admitted the drummer had recently been diagnosed with diabetes and hospitalized twice for heart complications. Azman noted "extreme fatigue took a toll" following Azreen's recent participation in BMX competitions.
- After the collapse, frontman Bakaruddin Daud, also known as Burn, rushed to help and stated, "I rushed towards him, but I could feel that he was gone." Azreen was pronounced dead at 11 p.m. at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.
- Vocalist Burn handled all funeral arrangements for his long-time bandmate and confirmed the band plans to continue playing. He added, "We have not yet discussed, but we will continue the group's struggle."
- Formed in the 1980s, Meditasi found success during Malaysia's booming rock scene of the 90s with Azreen as a founding member. Bakaruddin said he was "truly shocked and deeply saddened" by the loss of his friend and bandmate.
