- In 2024, the board halved Najib's 12-year jail sentence and reduced his fine to RM50 million; he currently faces additional proceedings linked to 1MDB, where US investigators allege $4.5 billion was embezzled.
- The board was recalled at short notice with only one item on the agenda, observers noted, while palace officials provided no public comment regarding the meeting proceedings on Facebook.
- Pakatan Harapan secretariat members previously maintained that those convicted in high-profile corruption cases "must serve out the full sentence set by the courts," warning clemency could deal a global blow to the rule of law.
