'World-First' UK Airline Enters Liquidation with All Planned Flights Cancelled
EcoJet Airlines, launched in 2023 as the first electric carrier, ceased operations after three years with all flights canceled as liquidators were appointed last month.
- Opus Restructuring confirmed last month that Companies House shows EcoJet Airlines has entered liquidation, with 'EcoJet was a start-up business and has no material assets'.
- Founded by Dale Vince OBE and Brent Smith, pilot and co-founder, EcoJet launched in 2023 from Edinburgh and planned UK services in 2024 on an Edinburgh–Southampton route with expansion to mainland Europe.
- Opus Restructuring said the voluntary liquidation was initiated by the company’s board and noted 'EcoJet was a start-up business and has no material assets', with company members funding the process to secure employees' statutory entitlements.
- All planned EcoJet flights have been cancelled, disrupting customers and halting expansion plans; the collapse adds to UK travel turmoil after other UK airlines entered liquidation in 2025 and four UK travel companies ceased trading in 2026.
- With plans still for European and long‑haul routes, Dale Vince OBE said the project is being paused as technology and regulatory pieces have not aligned, pausing work at this time.
