Major summer road closure for Renton, Issaquah drivers
King County says the 94-year-old bridge can no longer be repaired, and the new design adds 8-foot shoulders and wider clearance.
Southeast May Valley Road closed in both directions near Issaquah-Hobart Road Southeast for replacement of the 94-year-old Fifteen Mile Creek Bridge, affecting the route connecting Issaquah, Renton, and Maple Valley through Aug. 23.
King County Road Service Division determined the timber structure built in 1932 is irreparable; King County Road Services Division Director Tricia Davis stated the full replacement is essential for keeping the road network safe.
The closure bars all vehicles, including emergency responders and pedestrians, with a signed detour routing traffic through downtown Issaquah; trucks exceeding 15,000 pounds require alternate routes due to freight restrictions.
County officials coordinate with WSDOT, Eastside Fire & Rescue, Bellevue Fire, Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority, and Renton Regional Fire Authority on the project; Eastside Fire & Rescue anticipates no changes to emergency response times.
The new bridge design increases span length and adds 8-foot shoulders to meet current road standards; crews aim to reopen the road before the Issaquah School District begins its 2026-27 academic year.
