Bundaberg Braces for Major Flooding
Emergency alerts and evacuations are underway as about 180 properties face flooding from the Burnett River expected to peak near 7.6m, close to 2010 levels, officials said.
- On Tuesday, flooding was under way in the Bundaberg CBD and expected to worsen as the Burnett River neared a 7.6m peak from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.
- Heavy downpours have swollen the Burnett catchment, the Walla gauge reached 19 metres, and Paradise Dam was at 200 per cent capacity and spilling, Bureau of Meteorology warned of flooding.
- The Burnett River gauge shows 5.67m and rising; both Tallon and Burnett bridges were closed by 3pm, with flood modelling revealing inundation zones, and 280 homes and 120 businesses expected to be flooded, according to Bundaberg mayor Helen Blackburn.
- Mayor Helen Blackburn warned residents and said, 'If the 2010 floods affected you �then you need to consider leaving your property immediately and finding safe haven' and Queensland Fire and Rescue added, 'We really urge all people on the roads just to take extra care'.
- Volunteers emptied the Sandy Hook Clubhouse after near-second-floor flooding, while residents recalled the 2010 and 2013 floods as Bundaberg’s population of more than 70,000 faces similar threats.
