Pakistan extends Afghan refugee deportation deadline to Sept. 1
PAKISTAN, AUG 5 – Pakistan will repatriate over 1.3 million Afghan Proof of Registration cardholders starting September 1 amid security concerns and resource pressures, officials said.
- Pakistan announced that starting September 1, 2025, it will initiate the formal process of returning more than 1.3 million Afghan refugees registered under PoR cards.
- This decision follows the expiration of PoR cards on June 30, 2025, which changed these refugees' status to unlawful residents and led to organized repatriation planning.
- Provincial governments and relevant organizations have been tasked with identifying all PoR cardholders and formulating comprehensive plans that address transit locations, transportation logistics, and financial support to facilitate their repatriation.
- The Ministry of Interior stated that voluntary returns start immediately, while compulsory returns for remaining individuals will commence on September 1, with NADRA and FIA managing deregistration and border support.
- The UNHCR expressed concern about forced returns, acknowledging Pakistan's over 40-year hospitality but warning such action contradicts humanitarian principles amid rising security and resource pressures.
