Stansted Airport Passengers Travel Rule Change Announced
On Wednesday, the UK lowered the minimum age for airport eGates from 10 to 8, enabling younger children to use facial recognition technology at 13 major airports across the country.
Previously limited to passengers aged 10 and over, the policy change enables up to 1.5 million additional children to bypass manual queues and clear border control faster, Confused.com travel expert Tom Vaughan noted.
Children must measure at least 120cm tall to be detected by biometric scanners and remain accompanied by an adult, with these requirements also applying at ports in Brussels and Paris.
Minister for Border Security and Asylum Alex Norris stated the change reduces travel hassle, while AirportsUK Chief Executive Karen Dee called it a "welcome development" that speeds up the border process for families.
As facial recognition technology becomes more established, experts anticipate further age threshold reductions in coming years, though 43% of holidaymakers remain confused about passport validity rules for European Union travel.
