1.7 million households will not turn heating on this winter, survey suggests
The poll found 52% of households fear being cold, while 28% say higher bills have made heating unaffordable.
On Tuesday, the Maine Department of Marine Resources announced plans to conduct a winter research survey in the Gulf of Maine to study marine life near a proposed offshore wind development.
Researchers aim to establish baseline data on fish and invertebrate populations to help scientists understand the effects of offshore wind development on marine ecosystems and commercial fishing.
The 55-foot trawling vessel Northern Lights will depart from Portland to conduct approximately 37 sampling tows over nine days, with operations beginning the week of January 11, 2027.
Officials stated they do not plan to ask fishermen to move gear during the survey, though the department will issue notices if fishing equipment interferes with research operations.
The survey is scheduled to continue through February 28, 2027, with potential extensions into March depending on weather conditions, supporting Maine's broader study of offshore wind impacts.
