New Law Limits when Police in Maine Can Work with Immigration Enforcement Agencies

The law bars police from using federal immigration agents for translation or detainers, after advocates cited more than 50 calls to immigration officials in 2025.

Immigrant rights advocates said the new law, which takes effect Wednesday, will improve trust in Maine officials and ensure public safety, regardless of immigration status.
