The court said two police personnel must accompany the Krishnanagar MP on constituency visits after reports of egg pelting and mob harassment.
- On Thursday, the Calcutta High Court extended interim protection from arrest for Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra in an alleged hate speech case until January 29, 2027, with the next hearing scheduled for January 13.
- Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya ordered two security personnel to accompany Moitra during visits to her Krishnanagar constituency through November 30, responding to allegations she was subjected to egg pelting and harassment.
- The alleged hate speech case stems from a September 1 social media post regarding police officers; Moitra appeared before the Diamond Harbour Cyber Crime Police Station on August 14 for questioning.
- Separately, Moitra alleged she was pressured to vacate a Circuit House on August 14 while a crowd shouted "Jai Shri Ram," claiming authorities sought to "drive her out of her constituency only because of her political affiliation."
- The Supreme Court issued notice on Thursday to the West Bengal government on Moitra's separate petition seeking constituency protection, though Solicitor General Tushar Mehta questioned its maintainability citing more than 500 MPs nationwide.
