Mahmoud Khalil lawsuit says Columbia failed to protect pro-Palestinian activists
The complaint says Columbia ignored repeated harassment reports and doxxing, and that its actions helped lead to Khalil’s 104-day immigration detention.
- On Monday, Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil sued Columbia University in federal court, alleging the institution failed to address harassment and retaliated against students who reported it.
- In March 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Khalil at his campus apartment, and he spent 104 days in a Louisiana jail during the Trump administration's crackdown on pro-Palestinian demonstrators.
- Khalil alleges Columbia "refused to correct disinformation" about him while detained, enabling harassment of students with perceived Arab or Muslim ancestry and characterizing pro-Palestinian events as security risks to justify policy changes.
- The legal filing also names the pro-Palestinian group and its president, Mohammad Zubairi, as plaintiffs, seeking a court order to restore campus access, end the group's suspension, and secure damages.
- Columbia declined to comment on the lawsuit but stated in an email that "creating a campus environment where every member of our community feels welcome, supported, and safe is fundamental to who we are as a University.
