Elizabeth Banks Set for Live-Action Movie Based on Iconic Children's Books Series

Elizabeth Banks will play Ms. Frizzle as Legendary and Scholastic push the live-action adaptation forward after six years in development.

  • Legendary Entertainment is developing a live-action 'The Magic School Bus' film with Elizabeth Banks attached to star as Ms. Valerie Frizzle and produce alongside Scholastic Entertainment, regaining momentum after six years in development.
  • Filmmaker Rob Letterman will write and direct the adaptation, bringing experience from his work on 'Goosebumps' and 'Detective Pikachu' to the family-oriented franchise project.
  • Created by author Joanna Cole and illustrator Bruce Degen, the 'edutainment' franchise follows quirky teacher Ms. Frizzle and her class, with more than 90 million books sold in its 40th anniversary year.
  • Previous adaptations include a PBS animated series from the 1990s featuring Lily Tomlin as the voice of Ms. Frizzle, which aired in more than 100 countries, and Netflix's 2017 series with Kate McKinnon.
  • Co-Producing the feature, Marc Platt Productions helps bring the class to the big screen for the first time, as Legendary acquired the rights from Universal, which initially optioned the project in June 2020.
