Orlando Magic Introduces New Coach Sean Sweeney
Sean Sweeney arrives after helping guide San Antonio to the NBA Finals and inherits a young Orlando core that has reached three straight playoffs.
On Thursday, June 18, 2026, the Orlando Magic formally introduced Sean Sweeney as their 16th head coach, bringing him aboard following his tenure as associate head coach with the San Antonio Spurs.
Sweeney replaces Jamahl Mosley, who was fired last month after five seasons and three consecutive first-round playoff exits, as the Magic seek leadership for their young core including Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.
Magic President Jeff Weltman said Sweeney "knocked our socks off" during the interview process, noting the 41-year-old coach's defensive expertise honed under Gregg Popovich.
To complement his defensive background, Sweeney is filling his coaching staff with offensive-minded assistants Riley Crean, Mfon Udofia, and DJ Bakker to unlock the roster's potential.
Prioritizing communication, Sweeney plans to hold the organization to a high standard while emphasizing player feedback, stating, "I think there's been a lot of listening," as the team prepares for 2026-27.
