Senona Among 5 Cops to Face Charges as Ramaphosa Acts on Madlanga Commission’s Interim Report

President Ramaphosa has accepted the Madlanga Commission's interim report and ordered a task team to investigate 14 SAPS and Ekurhuleni officials over allegations including corruption and murder.

  • On Thursday, the Presidency said President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia and SAPS National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola to form a special investigations task team probing allegations against senior SAPS and Ekurhuleni officials.
  • Chaired by retired Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, the Madlanga Commission submitted an interim report last year that found prima facie evidence and recommended investigations, suspensions, and prosecutions.
  • At least 14 high-ranking SAPS and Ekurhuleni officials were referred for investigation, including Major-General Lesetja Senona, Major-General Richard Shibiri and suspended EMPD chief Commissioner Julius Mkhwanazi.
  • Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia and National Commissioner Fannie Masemola will oversee a special investigations task team that will investigate individuals identified by the commission, reporting to Masemola, as Ramaphosa urged swift action that may lead to suspensions and prosecutions affecting SAPS and Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
  • The commission has not made final findings and some implicated individuals will return to respond while more witnesses are yet to testify, with allegations including links to organised-crime and claims such as instructions to dump a body, the commission said.
