Madagascar - 'Overwhelming' Destruction, Surging Needs After Back-to-Back Cyclones
Cyclone Gezani caused over 80% damage in Toamasina, Madagascar, and left 40 dead with urgent humanitarian needs amid a worsening food security crisis, WFP reported.
- Tuesday's landfall by Cyclone Gezani over Toamasina left the island's main port in ruins and prompted a national emergency, with $142m in damage.
- Developing east of Madagascar, Gezani intensified after re-entering the Mozambique Channel and struck about 10 days after Cyclone Fytia at the start of the cyclone season.
- On the ground in Toamasina, WFP teams found about 400,000 people face acute needs, with the city running on roughly 5 percent electricity, no water, and WFP’s office and warehouse destroyed.
- The WFP warned that needs exceed its capacity, highlighting a $18 million funding gap over the next six months and urging sustained donor support over the coming months.
- Recent flooding affected more than 700,000 people and damaged more than 170,000 homes, while before the cyclones 1.57 million people were food insecure, including 84,000 at emergency levels.
