Met Police urge students to move 7 October protest

Police said about 300 students should move the march because the anniversary will be a day of mourning for many Londoners.

  • On Friday, riot police clashed with high school students across France as education protests intensified into street violence, with about 400 schools closed and more than 1,900 arrests made Thursday when 305 officers were hurt.
  • Protests began over teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and deteriorating buildings, with students noting classes hold 35 pupils and exhausting schedules beginning at 8 a.m., while reading and mathematics scores have fallen in recent PISA assessments.
  • Some 170 students have been injured and more than 100 schools suffered "severe damage," with police arresting more than 5,000 people—mostly minors—since protests began; 15-year-old Kesia said "We are 35 per class, we don't have enough chairs" before fleeing tear gas in Pantin.
  • After Friday talks with Education Minister Edouard Geffray, student leaders expressed disappointment, with union vice-president Louis Letoublon saying "We're a bit disappointed" and leaders stating "We haven't received any concrete commitments" despite Geffray's assurance they were being heard.
  • Student unions are calling for another nationwide mobilization on Tuesday dubbed "act three," backed by university unions, parents' associations and six trade unions; historian Stéphane Sirot suggested this movement could follow 2006's trajectory toward compromise, occurring six months before elections when President Emmanuel Macron's government faces deep unpopularity.
