Senegal distances itself from AU support for Macky Sall at the UN
The Permanent Mission of Senegal to the African Union informed the AU Commission on Friday that the Senegalese government has at no stage endorsed the candidacy of former president Macky Sall for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Presented to the 55 member states of the continental organization on Friday, 27 March, the draft decision was retold by some 20 of them – including Senegal, the authorities currently in power in Dakar maintaining cold relations with Macky Sall. The initiative had been launched by Burundi, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the AU.
On 2 March, the former Senegalese President formalized his candidacy for the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations, currently held by António Guterres. The African Union should say, on Friday 27 March, if it gives him its formal support.
