San Jose Sharks make Macklin Celebrini NHL's highest-paid player with extension

On Wednesday, the San Jose Sharks signed star centre Macklin Celebrini to a five-year, $94 million extension, making the 20-year-old the highest-paid player in the NHL with an $18.8 million annual value.
Celebrini earned the deal after a historic 2025-26 season where he led the franchise with 115 points, eclipsing the previous San Jose record of 114 set by Joe Thornton in 2006-07.
During his age-19 season, the North Vancouver, B.C., native recorded 45 goals and 70 assists, accounting for 46.2 percent of the team's goals and becoming just the second teenager in NHL history to reach those totals.
The contract keeps Celebrini with the Sharks through the 2031-32 season and surpasses the $18 million average annual value in the recent deal signed by Anaheim Ducks forward Leo Carlsson.
Sharks General Manager Mike Grier stated that Celebrini has established himself as a premier player, with the organization viewing the center as the centerpiece of their core for the future.
