Mabank Fire Chief Killed While Directing Traffic at a Texas Rodeo
Texas officials are investigating the crash that killed Fire Chief Charlie Woodard while he directed traffic at a community rodeo.
On Saturday night, Mabank Fire Chief Charlie Woodard died after being struck by a pickup truck while directing traffic at the Mabank Rodeo Grounds, roughly one hour southeast of Dallas.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Woodard stepped into the westbound lane of the highway around 10:30 p.m. Saturday and was transported to a hospital in Gun Barrel City, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Investigating the collision involving a Chevy pickup, Texas DPS officials stated the driver was not injured in the fatal crash.
Officials from the Mabank Police Department stated Woodard's "service and dedication to the citizens of Mabank will not be forgotten," while the Kaufman County Sheriff noted condolences to the fire department and family.
Malakoff Mayor Nicole Mason-Driver said, "Let us honor Chief Woodard's life by remembering his selfless service," as the Texas Municipal Police Association called the event a "heartbreaking loss.
