M&S axes service that shoppers 'absolutely swear by' from all stores after 16 years
M&S said low customer take-up prompted the move, while handheld Scan & Shop devices in 120 stores will remain in use.
Marks and Spencer has discontinued its mobile Scan & Shop app across all UK stores, citing low customer take-up as the reason for the decision.
Originally launched as "Mobile Pay Go" in October 2018 at six London stores, the checkout-free technology expanded nationwide by November 2020, letting shoppers skip queues for purchases under £45.
Shoppers expressed strong disappointment; one Reddit user posted "Noooooooo," while Vivienne Truran noted the service "saves lots of time and no need to visit the checkout."
Despite the mobile app's removal, handheld Scan & Shop devices remain operational at 120 stores across the UK. An M&S spokesperson stated the handheld solution "will continue to increase."
The company said, "We regularly review our in-store services to ensure we're delivering the best possible experience," signaling focus on higher-value customer offerings moving forward.
