The European Parliament adopted on Tuesday the revision of the rules on the coordination of social security systems in the European Union, which aims to ensure clearer and more equitable access to social benefits for persons living or working in another Member State.The new rules concern unemployment benefits, family benefits, posted workers and persons working in several Member States, as well as combating social security fraud.
The measure will cover around 15,000 workers who cross the Portuguese-Spanish border daily to work, with emphasis on the North-Galiza axis.
In the future, the unemployed will be compensated by the state in which they were last employed and not by their state of residence.
The House supports the fact that the country in which contributions are made will take up the unemployment of cross-border workers.
Fidesz, Mi Hazánk and Tisza also abstained from the EP when the social rules were updated. According to the latter, the text is favorable on several points, but does not provide reassuring answers to all questions.
The European Parliament has approved a revision of social security in the EU. Cross-border workers are to have easier access to benefits and stronger protection of rights.
