The 46-year-old kept a clean card and made five birdies on the back nine to build a 14-under total through 36 holes.
On Friday, Lucas Glover shot a 6-under 65 at TPC Deere Run to take a two-shot lead at the John Deere Classic, remaining bogey-free through 36 holes.
At 46, Glover seeks to secure his future on the PGA Tour as his three-year exemption from winning back-to-back tournaments in late summer 2023 expires this year.
Lee Hodges trails by two shots at 14-under 128, while Zac Blair sits another stroke behind after shooting a 68 on Friday.
Iowa native Zach Johnson is tied for 11th, six shots behind, after skipping the Senior Open to play this local event; Jordan Spieth narrowly made the cut at 3-under 141.
Representing the younger generation, 18-year-old Blades Brown remains bogey-free alongside Glover, while Canadians A.J. Ewart and Mackenzie Hughes are the only two Canadians to make the weekend cut.
