Louisiana Has the Highest STD Rate in the Country
UNITED STATES, JUL 25 – In 2023, nearly 2.5 million new STD cases were reported nationwide, with Black Americans experiencing rates more than seven times higher than White Americans, CDC data shows.
- In 2023, Louisiana reported the highest STD rate in the U.S. with 1,201.6 cases per 100,000 residents, leading national statistics.
- This high rate is driven by persistently elevated infections in Southern states and racial disparities, including Black Americans having over seven times higher rates than White Americans.
- Nearly 2.5 million new STD infections were recorded nationally in 2023, a significant rise from 1.8 million in 2013, with Chlamydia and Syphilis showing sharp increases especially among young women under 25.
- Syphilis cases increased sixfold from about 34,000 in 2013 to over 205,000 in 2023, while HIV rates remained relatively stable during the same period.
- These trends highlight ongoing public health challenges with seasonal peaks in summer and racial and regional disparities, suggesting a need for targeted prevention and treatment efforts.
